Autumn in Girona

By October 18, 2016 No Comments

Autumn is my favourite season.

The pressure of racing ones bike suddenly ends. The next race is at least 3 months away. There is no need to suffer intervals, hill reps, or sprints, for the next few weeks at least. We can actually return to enjoying riding our bike. It’s time to take our eyesight off the power meter and towards the surroundings.

Which leads nicely to the best thing about Autumn – Girona. Trees turn from green to red, yellow and every colour in between. The clouds in the sky create sun ray patterns before you.  Birds fly overhead as they flock from one place to another. Girona old town becomes just that bit quieter and Catalan is again the most widely heard language at street level. The roads are even quieter. A car on some of our loops is a rare sighting.

The mornings are fresh, but beautiful. By 10am it is normally plenty warm for a training ride in shorts and a short sleeve jersey. The local cyclists will wear a full face balaclava even when temperatures regularly hit the mid 20’s. The conversation normally goes something like this “aren’t you sweating like a git in all of that clothing?” “It’s October”. “But it’s 25 degrees and the sun is shining”…..silence.

Riding in Autumn is my favourite. Just eating up the miles on new undiscovered roads, with big friendly groups, small chain gangs and sometimes just on my own to forget about the world. All the cyclists are back in Girona for the off-season and all have the same idea.

It’s not too late to come and see for yourself. Drop us an email now info@eatsleepcycle.com.
