Asturias, Cantabria the Basque country & Galicia offer quiet roads, lush green landscapes, beautiful routes along the Costa Verde and hardcore stage finishes for the Vuelta España. The people of Northern Spain are open and friendly, the food hearty and delicious, making this unique region perfect for a cycling tour.

The Vuelta España passes through Northern Spain every year and every year riders complain about the brutality of the finishing climbs: test your legs against the steep slopes of El Angliru and Los Machucos. Climb the Peña Carbarga, the Alto de Ermita, the Lagos de Covadonga and more.

North Spain Cycling Highlights

Alto del Angliru

Alto de l'Angliru from La Vega

The Alto de l’Angliru is as tough as cycling gets. Located west of the Picos mountains and just south of Oviedo, the climb spans 13 km with a monstrously steep final section of double digit gradients.

Lagos de Covadonga

Lagos de Covadonga from Covadonga

High up in the Picos de Europa are the Lagos de Covadonga. One of the favourite climbs of the Vuelta, talented climbers such as Pedro Delgado, Robert Millar, Lucho Herrera and Laurent Jalabert have stormed to victory it’s challenging slopes.

With an anonymous, forested beginning the climb unfolds as the road ascends, culminating in spectacular vistas of the Picos de Europa National Park and the lakes of Covadonga that give the climb it’s name.

Over the last weeks we had the opportunity to spend some (significant) time in beautiful cycling mecca Girona and met the lovely hardworking guys and girls from Eat Sleep Cycle [...] If you are looking for some awesome riding in the Costa Brava or Europe in general, these are the people that can help you. And if you are in Girona, check out their brand new Hub - it is a great place!

Manon BThe ESC experience- amazing cycling in the Costa Brava

Could not recommend EatSleepCycle more. Our first day took us on a challenging 100km trek experiencing panoramic and breathtaking views of rolling hills and mountains ,second day a 80km to the coastline Tossa de Mar and a 50km on the third day to Lake Banyoles. Our guide Brian had great energy, very engaging with all riders and above all the service from day 1 was impeccable. We have actually pre-booked a trip for next year.

Hired a bike for the day [...] and did the via verde Girona to Sant Feliu dels Guixols (40 km and you can get the bus back with a bike). Zulma was very helpful with the rental and it’s great they are open Sundays. Bike was in great condition. Would recommend them.
