Portugal’s southern-most region, the Algarve, offers a diverse and beautiful landscape for all kinds of cycling, as well as warm temperatures all year round, making it the perfect destination for riders of all disciplines. With flat roads (up to around 300 m in elevation) along the coast and more hills and climbs further inland, the Algarve presents a veritable hotbed of exciting routes and incredible views. With over 200 km of coastline, the Atlantic Ocean and the region’s many beaches are never far away!
Silves Castle sits above the town of Silves in the Algarve, and is said to be one of the best-preserved medieval castle’s in the region. Like many fortified buildings in southern Europe, Silves Castle bears the scars of different cultural take-overs, such as both Christian and Islamic additions to the architecture during the 12th and 13th centuries. Any visitors to the town are encouraged to explore the narrow streets, and walk up to the castle to enjoy the panoramic views.
The Cabo de São Vicente is the western-most point in the Algarve. Although it’s not the western-most point of continental Europe, it has always been the last piece of land Portguese sailors see when once they’ve set sail for the open waters of the Atlantic. It is a popular spot among tourists and visitors, particularly in the evening, when you can watch the sun set over the ocean as a spectacle of pinks, oranges and purples fills the sky.
