Canary Islands Highlights

Pico De Las Nieves

Pico De Las Nieves

Enjoy the best views of the whole island of Gran Canaria from el Pico de la Nieves. This challenging ascent is considered by some to be the toughest climb in Europe, with percentages of up to 23% and gaining over 1,500 m in elevation. However, as with all mountains climbs worth tackling, the views from the road and especially from the summit are breath-taking, offering panoramic vistas of Gran Canaria and on a clear day, across to nearby Tenerife!

Mount Teide

Mount Teide

Tenerife’s silhouette is dominated by the mighty Mount Teide, which rises to an impressive 3,718 m, making it the highest peak in Spain. The mountain is in fact an active volcano, although its last eruption was in 1909. In terms of cycling, it is a mecca for professional and well-seasoned cyclists who want to work on their climbing and descending, and there are several routes to the top from different points on the island. The views while ascending this mighty mount will not disappoint, with the chance to see the cliffs of Los Gigantes and the Chinyero lava flows, not to mention the stunning views across to the nearby islands, such as La Palma and Gran Canaria.

Valley of the Tears

Valley of the Tears

A true Gran Canarian climb this is a beast that will push any rider to their limits but provide reward in equal measure with constantly changing, spectacular vistas. The climb starts with grades of 25% and this sets the tone for the challenge ahead.

Two Islands, One Trip

Our tours split the riding between Gran Canaria and Tenerife, giving you two completely different landscapes in one week. Road or gravel, the riding on both islands is unlike anything you'll find.

Warm Weather, No Excuses

The Canary Islands sit off the coast of Africa, which means warm temperatures and reliable sunshine whatever time of year you visit. If you're looking to escape the cold and enjoy the exercise, this is where to come.

Find the Perfect Bike

No bike? No problem! We have a great selection of road, mountain, gravel bikes and e-bikes available for hire ready for your trip.

Fresh, Local Food

After a big day in the saddle, there's nothing quite like fresh fish and papas arrugas at a harbourside restaurant. The Canary Islands take their food seriously, and the local cuisine more than earns its place on the itinerary.

FAQs

1
What rider level is best for a Canary Islands cycling holiday?
You don't need to be a pro, but you should have regular cycling experience and feel comfortable with sustained climbing. Both current tours are rated Advanced, so back to back challenging days in the saddle are part of the deal. Each tour includes a full description of the level, expected daily ride time, distance and elevation. If you have any doubts, we're more than happy to speak to you on the phone and help find you the perfect trip!
2
Which is the best Canary Island for cycling?
Gran Canaria and Tenerife are both outstanding, and our tours take in both. Gran Canaria is a climber's island with no flat roads to speak of, home to the brutal Valley of the Tears and the summit of Pico de las Nieves. Tenerife is dominated by Mount Teide, the highest peak in Spain, with long uninterrupted climbs through pine forests and volcanic landscapes. Together they make for one of the best cycling trips you can do.
3
When is the best time to cycle in the Canary Islands?
The Canary Islands sit off the coast of Africa, which means warm temperatures and good riding conditions for most of the year. They're particularly popular with cyclists looking to escape winter back home, and our tours run from November through to January. Check the individual tour pages for specific departure dates.
4
Can I hire a bike in the Canary Islands or bring my own?
Both options are available. We recommend hiring one of our bikes and will work with you after booking to find the best size and model for your riding style. E-bikes are also available on every tour. If you'd prefer to bring your own bike, that's no problem. Just bear in mind that on some tours there may be a supplement to transport your bike box. If in doubt, just ask!
5
What is the terrain like?
Volcanic, varied and never flat. Gran Canaria has no flat roads to speak of, which means every ride involves serious climbing and fast descents. Tenerife is dominated by Mount Teide, with routes rising through pine forests and across lava fields to the summit. Gravel riders will find an endless network of tracks criss-crossing both islands.
6
What's included in a Canary Islands cycling tour?
Accommodation in handpicked 4-star hotels, most meals, expert guides, a support vehicle with mechanical assistance and ride nutrition are all included. Bike rental is available to add on at the time of booking. Not included are international flights, personal travel insurance and any optional extras. Check your chosen tour's itinerary for the full inclusions list.
7
What is the food like?
Canarian cuisine is simple, fresh and genuinely worth looking forward to. Expect fresh fish, papas arrugas and local produce at harbourside restaurants chosen by the team. The Canary Islands take their food seriously, and after a big day in the saddle you'll be glad of it.
8
What should I pack for my trip?
The Canary Islands are warm but the high altitude climbs can feel cool, especially on the descents. Pack lightweight cycling kit, sun protection, a gilet or light wind jacket for the summits and good gloves. We'll send you a detailed packing list in your Road Book, one month before your tour departs.
