Our Canary Islands cycling tours have a way of surprising you. Gran Canaria and Tenerife offer warm weather, volcanic landscapes and climbs that will test any cyclist. Tackle the leg-sapping Valley of the Tears, push up to the summit of Pico de las Nieves with views stretching across to Tenerife, or take on the mighty Mount Teide, the highest peak in Spain. When the riding is done, fresh fish and papas arrugas await.
Enjoy the best views of the whole island of Gran Canaria from el Pico de la Nieves. This challenging ascent is considered by some to be the toughest climb in Europe, with percentages of up to 23% and gaining over 1,500 m in elevation. However, as with all mountains climbs worth tackling, the views from the road and especially from the summit are breath-taking, offering panoramic vistas of Gran Canaria and on a clear day, across to nearby Tenerife!
Tenerife’s silhouette is dominated by the mighty Mount Teide, which rises to an impressive 3,718 m, making it the highest peak in Spain. The mountain is in fact an active volcano, although its last eruption was in 1909. In terms of cycling, it is a mecca for professional and well-seasoned cyclists who want to work on their climbing and descending, and there are several routes to the top from different points on the island. The views while ascending this mighty mount will not disappoint, with the chance to see the cliffs of Los Gigantes and the Chinyero lava flows, not to mention the stunning views across to the nearby islands, such as La Palma and Gran Canaria.
A true Gran Canarian climb this is a beast that will push any rider to their limits but provide reward in equal measure with constantly changing, spectacular vistas. The climb starts with grades of 25% and this sets the tone for the challenge ahead.
