Classic Climbs of Bogotá is a guided road cycling tour for riders who want to take on the high-altitude climbs around Bogotá, the capital of Colombian cycling and the home roads of some of the best climbers in the pro peloton.
Stay in a a comfortable 4-star hotel in Bogotá and ride the classic climbs of the Cundinamarca highlands. Ride from La Calera to Guatavita, visit the Egan Bernal mural in Zipaquirá on the way to the Neusa Reservoir, take on Alto de Patios and the mighty Alto de La Cuchilla, then finish with the queen stage over Verjón Pass to Choachí and back.
Off the bike, explore the colonial streets of La Candelaria and enjoy lunches at hand-picked local restaurants.
Bogotá sits at around 2,600 m and the climbs top out at 3,450 m, so we build in a rest and acclimatisation day before the first ride. Daily distances are kept short so you can focus on the climbs. This trip is best enjoyed by experienced cyclists who are comfortable climbing at altitude and riding in a small group on open roads.
Rated 3 out of 4 our Advanced tours are designed for people who ride regularly and want back to back challenging days on the bike. Riders should be confident riding in a small group, comfortable on extended climbs (at your own pace) and have good bike handling skills on corners and descents. E-bikes are available on all of our tours.
Arrive in Bogotá and check in to the hotel. Airport pickup and transfer is available on request. In the evening, meet your guide and the group for a welcome dinner at a restaurant near the hotel.
After breakfast, build your bike with the support team and get everything dialled for the week ahead. Then head into the colonial neighbourhood of La Candelaria, Bogotá’s historic centre, with its cobbled streets, colourful houses and museum visit included. The afternoon is free to rest and acclimatise to the altitude.
The first ride of the week is a gentle introduction to riding at altitude. Roll out from La Calera through the green Andean highlands to the lakeside town of Guatavita, topping out at 2,750 m. Lunch is at Casa Café La Huerta, a favourite stop with local riders.
Start in Zipaquirá, hometown of Tour de France winner Egan Bernal, with a stop at his mural before climbing to Margaritas and the Neusa Reservoir. The route tops out at 3,150 m with big views over the high plateau. Refuel afterwards with lunch at a high-end restaurant in the area.
A double climbing day. Warm up on Alto de Patios (3,050 m), one of Bogotá’s most popular climbs, then transfer to Guasca for the main event: Alto de La Cuchilla, a demanding climb to 3,400 m. The afternoon is for rest and recovery.
The queen stage of the week. Climb Verjón Pass, the highest point of the trip at 3,450 m, then descend into the valley to Choachí before riding back over the pass. A big day in the high Andes and a fitting finale to the week.
A relaxed recovery morning before you check out and head to the airport or continue your travels in Colombia. Airport transfers are available on request.
