Discover rural landscapes of Catalunya, climb into the stunning mountains of the Pyrenees and spin along the Costa Brava on this magical 360 km ride on a network of well-maintained, traffic-free cycle routes.
Rest your head and legs in a range of wonderful 3* and 4* hotels along the route, such as the Rectoria Sant Miguel de Pineda, a 12th century rectory beautifully restored by owners Goretti & Roy and the beautiful guesthouse Les Arbousiers on the edge of Céret. Breakfast is included each day, but guests are invited to choose lunch and coffee stops in any of the towns and villages along the way at the time and place that’s most convenient. The Road Book and tour information contains plenty of recommendations for eateries.
This is a flexible itinerary which can be ridden over any number of days depending on fitness levels – the more time you have available, the easier the ride! However, our recommended itinerary to best enjoy the Pirinexus is 6 days.
Rated 2 out of 4 our Intermediate tours are designed for sporty people who are looking to enjoy some more challenging rides. E-bikes are available on all of our tours.
The adventure kicks off in Girona, the home of Eat Sleep Cycle. No sooner have you arrived and the bikes are set up, the tour begins with its first leg from Girona to Sant Miguel. A gentle uphill climb all the way, the first day takes you 43 km northwards into the volcanic Catalan region of La Garrocha. Stop for lunch in one of the villages en route, spend a restful night in Sant Miguel.
A 58.2 km-route is on the cards for day 2, setting off from Sant Miguel after a good breakfast at the hotel, and heading northbound once again to the town of Llanars in the Spanish foothills of the Pyrenees. Stop for lunch en route at a time and place that suits, and check out the Road Book for recommendations on where to find a great evening meal.
Day 3 of the Pirinexus Gravel tour crosses the Spanish-French border and moves deep into the Pyrenees mountains. Today’s leg of the route presents a (mostly) steady climb and a long decent towards the French village of Céret. Rest for the night in Les Arbousiers, a beautiful guesthouse with lush gardens and wonderful hosts.
On day 4, prepare for spectacular coastal views as the tour makes its way back into Catalonia and Spain, and down towards the Mediterranean coast. The destination for the day is L’Escala, home to the Ruins of Empúries, the only archaeological settlement on the Iberian peninsula that contains remains of both a Greek (Empòrion) and Roman city (Emporiae). Spend some time in the afternoon wandering along the coastal walkway and refer to the Road Book for recommendations for a delightful evening meal beside the sea. Spend the night at the Hostal Spa Empuries, located on a secluded beach on the Costa Brava and 300 m from the Roman Ruins.
Ride southbound on day 5, through the picture-postcard countryside of the Catalan L’Empordà region, passing through charming villages such as Palamós, Platja d’Aro and ending up in Sant Feliu de Guíxols. Enjoy lunch en route in one of the wonderful sea-side locations, and spend a restful night in Sant Feliu before the last day of the tour.
On the final day of the Pirinexus Gravel tour, the 43.9 km-route heads back into Girona on an undulating track through the green Catalan countryside. Depart from Girona later in the day, or add an additional night to enjoy the city!
Sadly, it’s time to say farewell! Ask us about extending your stay in Girona.
